I'd like to mention a book I wrote. It's freely available under a Creative Commons license. The title is "Invent Your Own Computer Games with Python" and its aimed at teaching kids and non-programmers how to program. It's ideal for beginners.

Each chapter gives the complete source code for a simple game, and the programming concepts are taught from the examples. (This was a major stumbling block for me when I was learning to program. I knew the concepts, but didn't really know how to apply them.)

Great list and well organized. It's always worth learning several languages as each language causes you to think about problems in different ways.

To Sam, dude, who is questioning the value of academics here?, or who is asking for you to tell everyone what academics you need in order to be a programmer? WTF??, the bottom line is, if you can do the work, and do it well that is all it really matters, theory vs practice two very different things. I'd hire some one who can do great programming, etc...etc... and has had real world experience, over one who has been schooled at some of the best Universities in this country and has had extensive knowledge of Chemistry, Physics, Math, and (Literature???). Come on dude, your skill set is only as valuable as the quality of work you produce, and not how much you know about this and that. Damn it!

On no, you skill set is not determine by academics, period!
