Windows Media Player to MPUI
opens MPG, AVI, Divx, Quicktime, Realplayer, nearly everything. It's a GUI for mplayer.

Great list - thanks! I'm have been using a number of these programs for some time, I plan to check out several more as a result of reading this. I second the vote for SMPlayer - I tried VLC and MPlayer, and SMPlayer is just or good or better, plus you don't need to go hunting down new codecs regularly. IBM has served up Lotus Symphony, which is based on Open Office code. The interface is a bit different from OO - one could say "dumbed-down" a bit, but in some ways much better. LS is to be integrated into the R8 release of Lotus Notes, if that matters to anyone. Finally, I cannot believe that someone seriously wrote that he runs Windows on a Mac so that he can use IE...

this is a handy list of sftwr altrntvz. thanks!

these comments would be even more useful if they were attached inline to the software in discussion vs. clumped into one big list at the end.

You know, I like OSS as much as the next guy, but I have these lists that just say well here's the OSS equivalent of the commercial/proprietary package you used. Have at it. In most cases the alternative is not mature enough, lacks key features or is harder to use and / or has a horrrid user interface.

Some laughable examples are:
Photoshop -> Gimp
Dreamweaver ->NVU
Outlook -> Thunderbird

And in many cases if an end user dare mail the list and ask for a feature they are flamed because "we're making this software for free here, buddy, like it or lump it." "You got the source, just hack it to do what you want."

I'm currently trying out InfraRecorder to replace Nero. This seems a viable contender as well.

I'm not sure OpenOffice and DocBook are ready to replace their venerable alternatives. Some things are still done better by the originals.

i'm using only 6 of the 50 open source software listed here, but out of the 6 is the top 3 (Ubuntu, Firefox and OpenOffice)... so far, these are enough for me :-)
