Joyent, founded in 2004, has developed an innovative platform that enables teams to effectively communicate and collaborate with email, calendaring, contacts, file sharing, and other shared applications. In November 2005, Joyent acquired TextDrive, an advanced application hosting solutions provider and combined – the company provides unique, on-demand service and hardware solutions for users moving from the old, brittle network of PCs to new, agile networks of server clusters, appliances, and mobile devices, all running Web-delivered applications.

The Joyent suite of applications is built on open-source components and Ruby on Rails. Joyent has developed, built and scaled some of the earliest Ruby on Rails applications – and as a result, developed a world-class infrastructure, a methodology around how to deploy and scale (both up and down) Rails applications and most importantly, a set of infrastructure geared specifically towards assessment, benchmarking, and introspection.

Joyent also has the largest OpenSolaris installation in the world. Joyent has been using OpenSolaris in production (now with more than 100 TB of data) since December, 2005. Previously they used a mix of FreeBSD and Ubuntu Linux. OpenSolaris is the only open source operating system that provides real-time observability, the Zetabyte file system (ZFS), mature scale on large multi-processor, multi-core systems, among many other benefits.

Features

Joyent uses what is known as “cloud computing,” where you run your applications on one or many virtual computers. The advantages to this approach include reduced up front hardware costs, reduced maintenance and administrative costs, the ability to match hardware and software capabilities and, most importantly, the flexibility to scale your site up and down depending on demand.

Joyent’s clients can choose among three options: the Accelerator for Applications operates on highest-end AMD Opteron x64 multi-core servers with 4GiB RAM per core. Excellent platform for Ruby, Python, PHP and Java applications; the Joyent Connector is their collection of easy-to-use Web-based applications perfect for small businesses as well as individuals or teams collaborating on a project, and; BingoDisk storage, a tool that is accessed over the Internet and that allows you to read and write your files from any computer using an operating system that is WebDAV capable. You also can download your files with any Web browser.

Although Joyent does not discuss control panels or many specific features, their shared hosting plans represent what they believe to be the best tools for working on the Web, with features like PHP 5.2, MySQL 5.0, Ruby, Rails, Django, Lighttpd, Subversion, WebDAV, and much more included by default. They have hosted the likes of Twitter and they’re fond of developers (free accelerators to Facebook developers, for instance), so you can expect Joyent to be forward-thinking regarding their applications.

Reliability & Reputation

When you use Joyent Accelerators to power your application, you are running your application on the best infrastructure (servers, storage, routers, load balancers, spam prevention) available. Joyent technology integrates these components into a seamless fabric that can be used by customers on-demand. Accelerators are built on OpenSolaris, multi-core (8+), RAM-rich servers (32GB+ each) and vast amounts of NAS storage. Accelerators are deployed in the best routing and switching fabric (Force 10) and the best load-balancers (F5 Networks) available.

Pricing

Joyent is not a bargain-basement choice for supporting a Web site. But, their technology is in demand by larger enterprises. The lowest priced option is geared for the start Up looking for quick way to develop the next great Web application. The second level is for Web-tier applications that need to scale horizontally. The next option is ideal for SMTP/IMAP services, heavy-use Web or application server-tier. Finally, the priciest option is for heavy database-tier, applications that need to scale vertically. You can upgrade plans or cancel at any time. Setup fees are never refundable.

If you cancel a monthly account in the middle of a monthly billing cycle, the cancellation will be effective the first of the following month. There is no pro-ration of the monthly fee. If you opt for one of the discounted yearly plans and exited before end of year, your refund will be based on the monthly fee for that plan.

Support

Joyent offers an online ticket support system. They also keep clients informed through forums, a knowledge base, a blog and a newsletter. As a Joyent Accelerator customer (higher tier price level), you have access to a dedicated emergency support phone line.
