What is it?

DirectAdmin is a Web hosting control panel offered by JBMC Software in Alberta, Canada. The first version 0.95 was released in March of 2003, with updated versions following almost monthly. The most recent version is 1.314, released in February of 2008. Version 1.315 is estimated to be released by the end of March.

Who is it for?

DirectAdmin is designed for use by commercial Web hosting services. The control panel offers domain owners ease of use, claiming to be “the easiest to use control panel, period.” It also claims to be the fastest running control panel available, with stability provided by automatic recovery from crashes, technical support available by phone, email, forums, and live online chat, and flexible licensing options to suit every kind of hosting company. Customers may request a refund within 30 days of installation if not satisfied with the DirectAdmin Web Control Panel when purchasing monthly, quarterly, or yearly licenses.

Features

DirectAdmin offers general features including an integrated ticket support system, live updates, a completely customizable interface, and unlimited-domain licenses. User features include email, FTP, DNS, Statistics, and Subdomains menus, plus Microsoft FrontPage Extensions, File Manager, MySQL databases, site backup, and error pages. This control panel allows directory password protection and advanced tools such as SSL certificates.

DirectAdmin also provides Reseller features such as easy account creation, listing, modification, and deletion, predefined account user packages, reseller statistics, one-click import and application of new skins and personalized nameservers. Administrator features include the ability to create resellers or extra administrators quickly and easily, DNS administration, complete usage statistics, and a menu from which the administrator can view, stop, start, and restart services. There is also a menu from which the administrator can view license status and download security and software upgrades.

Compatibility

The DirectAdmin control panel is compatible with several Linux and BSD operating systems. A clean installation of the system is all that is required, as the control panel will install all services automatically. Though DirectAdmin will run on slower systems, a processor of at least 500 mhz is recommended. A minimum 64 megabytes of memory is required, with at least 128 megabytes preferred. A hard drive with at least 2 gigabytes of free space after the Linux or BSD install is also required. The processor must be x86 compatible. SSH must be installed and operational. The domain owner must have root access on the server and have at least one external IP address. For DNS control, at least two external IP addresses are required.
