What Is It?

FrontPage Extensions are a series of server-side scripts that can be employed by FrontPage users to add dynamic functions to a Web site such as hit counters, data collection, and email and database processing.. The programs run on a server, and they offer various applications for authoring, administration, and browse-time functionality. FrontPage Server Extensions are not essential to host FrontPage Web sites, but some features in Microsoft FrontPage 2002 require that the FrontPage Server Extensions 2002 are installed on the server to which a Web site is published.

Who Is it For?

FrontPage Extensions are designed for FrontPage users only.

Features

The server extensions allow users to maintain three basic areas of functionality. With authoring, the Server Extensions interact with FrontPage Explorer when the user conducts file/folder maintenance functions, such as moving, deleting, and renaming files and/or folders in FrontPage designs. For example, if you move a file from one folder to another, the Server Extensions will edit all hyperlinks to and from that file to point to the correct (new) locations.

The extensions hand administration chores, especially in communication with the server and relate to permissions. This program can allow the administrator to keep track of user activities. This function is desirable when a site uses multiple authors. Front Page Extensions provide multiuser and remote authoring support, search, forms processing, and usage analysis.

Finally, Front Page Extensions use “components” within a Web site that operate much like CGI programs. This function acts as a browse-time function that accounts for database usage and function, registration form handlers, discussion form handlers and more.

Compatibility

FrontPage Server Extensions 2002 from Microsoft are compatible with Microsoft FrontPage 2002 and all previous versions of FrontPage. To install FrontPage Server Extensions on Microsoft Windows Server 2003, the user must go to Add/Remove Programs in the computer control pane and select to Add/Remove Windows Components. Most users might find that FrontPage Extensions operate best with a minimum of a Pentium processor, 24mb of RAM, and a modem no slower than 28.8 kbps.

To use features that require FrontPage Server Extensions on a Web site, the user must find a hosting provider that supports FrontPage Server Extensions. FrontPage Server Extensions can be installed on either Windows-based or UNIX-based Web servers. The most recent version for UNIX-based Web servers is 5.0.2.2634.
