What is it?

Phpauction is professional auction software with a complete set of applications and services for building auction Web sites. Phpauction was started by Gianluca Baldo as a personal project in 1997 to test the potential of the PHP scripting language. The first version of Phpauction was written in PHP/FI language and used miniSQL as the database backend. In October 1999 the script was migrated to PHP3 and the database engine was changed to MySQL. Some new functionalities were added and Phpauction was released as free software under the terms of the General Public License. In November 2000 the decision was made to leave a basic software application available under GPL and invest in research and development to develop an improved commercial Web-based software technology application. There are now six different auction solutions offered, from the free GPL version to EP and XL, plus solutions for specific auction types including classifieds and trading.

Who is it for?

PHPauction programs offer flexibility, power, and ease of use for small to medium businesses and individuals. The software is ready to use with an easy step-by-step installer and allows customers full control of their sites through a Web-based administrative backend. It is ideal for growing businesses as all solutions are developed to grow with the customer. This is achieved through package upgrades and/or available add-on modules designed to be integrated into the packages for additional functionalities.

Features

Phpauction GPL 3.2 is the most basic product in the Phpauction software family. It includes the main features for an auction site such as Reserve price, Buy it now, Standard & Dutch auctions, Item and Auction watch, among many others. It is free software, meaning that according to the GPL license anyone can use, modify, distribute and even sell it as long as it is done under the terms of the GPL license. Phpauction also offers auction software packages with additional features at additional cost. Some of the features included with these packages are homepage featured items, range-based fees, advanced signup approval management, message boards, and contact pages.

Compatibility

The minimum server requirements for Phpauction include an Apache Web server, PHP 4.0.X to PHP 5.X, and MySQL database. The Apache Web server is the recommended server, but all Phpauction packages have been successfully tested under different Unix/Linux environments. Some crucial problems were reported when using Microsoft Web servers, and Phpauction does not support Windows operating systems. MySQL is the only database for which Phpauction offers support. The porting to other RDBMS is planned for future versions. Phpauction also requires the ability to set up cron jobs. This is needed to periodically run the script responsible for checking expired auctions, updating the database accordingly, and sending notification e-mails to sellers and buyers.
