What is it?

PhpBB is an Open Source forum solution created in June 2000 by James Atkinson as a UBB-like forum solution for his wife. It is now in its third major version. Version 3.0 offers professional-quality modular design, high security, multiple-language interface, support for a multitude of database servers and complete layout customization.

Who is it for?

According to the phpBB Web site, “millions of people use phpBB on a daily basis, making it the most widely used opensource bulletin board system in the world.” It is for individual users wanting to stay in touch with a small group of friends, business owners looking to set up a large multi-category board for a corporate Web site, and everyone in between.

Features

phpBB features an extensive administration panel, allowing the customization of features without having to edit code directly. Advanced users will value the ease with which phpBB can be integrated into existing systems. Because phpBB is released under the GNU General Public License, changes can be made to the code without first having to obtain permission from the phpBB Group. The extensive database of user created modifications makes changing and adding features as simple as pasting code into the appropriate files, while the styles database contains hundreds of style and image packages to customize each board. There are also guides to help customers in the creation of their own modifications. phpBB offers a great complement of features while maintaining efficiency and ease of use. The large and highly customizable set of key features coupled with a standards compliant interface allows this software to compliment and grow with any Web site. Basic features include UTF-8 support, unread message tracking, and a private message system. Security includes both temporary and permanent bans and password hashing. Posters are able to use emoticons and quote multiple posts, and can even include multiple attachments when posting. The user control panel includes signatures, avatars, and ranks, and the administration control panel includes management capabilities for ranks, groups, and group memberships.

Compatibility

phpBB3 has a few requirements which must be met before it can be installed. These include a Web server or Web hosting account running on any major Operating System with support for PHP, a SQL database system, and PHP 4.3.3 or above with support for the database to be used. There are additional modules within PHP which will provide access to additional features, but they are not required. These include zlib Compression support, remote FTP support, XML support, Imagemagick support, and
GD Support.
