What Is It?

Reseller hosting allows a server account owner the ability to use alloted hard drive space and bandwidth on the server space to host third party Web sites. The person who becomes the reseller purchases the host’s services and then resells the space and services to customers for a profit. Reselling host space can occur even without a typical ‘reseller’ packet provided by hosting services, as resellers can sell space and bandwidth on dedicated, shared, grid, co-located or any other server where the space and bandwidth exist to share that Web host’s services.

Typically, a reseller packet will allow each reseller to provide their customers with a control panel, FTP services, SSL security and other options. In cases where the reseller sells space outside a Web hosting reseller packet, some of these options may not be available to customers who purchase hosting space from the reseller.

Features

The majority of reseller hosting plans allow the reseller to create service plans and choose a pricing structure apart from the plans and charges provided by the hosting company. Within these plans, the hosting service usually makes it easy for the reseller to brand that service and to offer customers the ability to use control panels, email, and other features provided by the original hosting service.

Although reselling does not require extensive knowledge of Web hosting technicalities, the reseller may discover that customers will provide enough incidents to learn everything there is to know about the Web hosting business. Many reseller hosting services suggest that resellers build a Web site interface that includes FAQ pages, as hosting services usually put the onus of reseller customer support on the reseller.

When the reseller uses a hosting service for reseller packages, that hosting service typically provides maintenance for the server and for network infrastructure and hardware. The reseller typically sets up the customer Web space and accounts through a control panel or through a Web interface, however. Additionally, many reseller packets include software that enables resellers to create accounts and control billing processes.

Who Is it For?

Anyone who wants to use host reselling as a sideline or a main business effort can offer Web hosting to third party Web sites. Typically, these individuals are familiar with – at the minimum – server administration. More experienced resellers also have knowledge about server management issues. Often, resellers hope to build a hosting service and use reselling as a means to that goal. Other resellers offer this service to clients as an add-on service to main services such as Web design, Web development or systems integration.

Compatibility

Reselling packages vary from host to host, and each one will offer a variety of options for control panels, account set up and management and other services.
