What is it?
Usermin is a Web-based user interface for functions including Webmail, password changing, mail filters, and fetchmail. It is a simplified version of Webmin, created for use on a Unix or Unix-like system, and under the BSD license. It consists of CGI programs in Perl that directly updates configuration files, and a simple Web server. The package is written in Perl 5, and uses the Authen::PAM Perl module. The original package, Webmin, was developed by Jamie Cameron. The idea for Usermin came from John Smith, who also provided sponsorship for its development through Webmin. It is designed for use by regular non-root users, and limits them to talks that they would be able to perform if logged in via SSH or at the console.
Who is it for?
Most users of Usermin are system administrators in need of a simple Webmail interface to offer their customers. It can be used to change passwords, read email with no additional servers installed, and setup users’ Procmail configurations for forwarding, spam filtering and autoresponders. Usermin also provides interfaces for viewing and managing data in MySQL and PostgreSQL databases, editing Apache .htaccess configuration files, and running commands on the server. The administrator has full control over which of these modules are available to users.
Features
Usermin is designed for the simple tasks of reading mail, setting up SSH, and configuring mail forwarding. The newest release of Usermin, version 1.330, includes many modules as standard. Most are supported by all operating systems. Many of the modules and the interfaces used in them are similar to those found on Webmin. The standard modules include Apache Options Files, Change Language, Password, Theme, and User Details, Command Shell, Custom Commands, Disk Quotas, Fetchmail Mail Retrieval, File Manager, GnuPG Encryption, HTTP Tunnel, Login Scripts, MIMI Type Programs, Mail Forwarding and Replies, Mount Filesystems, MySQL Database, Plan File, PostgreSQL Database, Procmail Mail Filter, Protected Web Directories, Read Mail, Running Processes, SSH Configuration, SSH/Telnet Login, Scheduled Commands, Cron Jobs and Emails, SpamAssassin Mail Filter, System Documentation, and Upload and Download. The modules are always available for download and re-installation in case of accidental deletion.
Compatibility
The best supported systems for Usermin are Linux and other Unix-like systems such as Solaris and FreeBSD. Configuration of Usermin is simplest via the Usermin Configuration module available in Webmin. All functionality can be managed through a Web browser, and because both products come from the same developer the management user interface is always up to date.
