What is it?

WebCalendar is an Open Source web-based calendar and scheduling system written in the popular scripting language PHP. The program was created by k5n, a custom software provider of solutions for businesses and communities with 10 years of Web development experience. WebCalendar has been under development since 2000. It continues to evolve today with the latest official public release of version 1.0.5. With years of development, testing, and user feedback from around the world, WebCalendar is now considered a stable and feature-rich product.

Who is it for?

WebCalendar can be configured as a single-user calendar, a multi-user calendar for groups of users, or as an event calendar viewable by visitors. It can be setup in a variety of ways, including as a schedule management system for a single person, or for a group of people with one or more assistants to manage the calendar of another user. Another possible setup is as an events schedule that anyone can view, allowing visitors to submit new events or as a calendar server that can be viewed with iCalendar-compliant calendar applications like Mozilla Sunbird, Apple iCal or GNOME Evolution or RSS-enabled applications like Firefox, Thunderbird, RSSOwl, FeedDemon, or BlogExpress. Potential users can test out WebCalendar using an online demo setup as a multi-user calendar. There are many hosting services offering WebCalendar as a one-click installation.

Features

WebCalendar offers a variety of features, including XHTML/CSS compliance, multi-user support, 30 supported languages, calendars viewable by day, week, month, or year, capability to view another user’s calendar or to view several at once via layers, Add/Edit/Delete capability of users and events, repeating events including support for overriding or deleting, configurable custom event fields, user-configurable preferences for colors, 12/24 time format, and Sun/Mon week start. The software also provides online help, scheduling conflicts checks, email reminders and notifications, and optional general access to allow a calendar to be viewed by people without a login.

Users can import from or export to iCalendar, vCalendar or Palm, make their calendars available publicly to anyone with an iCalendar-compliant calendar program, and subscribe to “remote” calendars hosted elsewhere on the net. The WebCalendar Web site also includes a Wiki site where users can add their own documentation or download useful software add-ons.

Compatibility

To use WebCalendar, MySQL, PostgreSQL, Oracle, DB2, Interbase, MS SQL Server, or ODBC is required. The software is available for both Linux/UNIX and Windows. The user’s hosting service or machine must support PHP 4.0 or 5.0 and MySQL or PostgreSQL, and must have access to cron/scheduled jobs for sending out email reminders in a multiuser WebCalendar setup.
